Good news for bikeway users
Senator Jack Reed, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy announced in a press release last week that, "Rhode Island is receiving $575,000 in federal funding for the Blackstone River Bikeway."
This is good news for those who take advantage of the Blackstone Bikeway. The funds from this grant will go towards the section of the bikeway that extends from Manville Hill Road in Lincoln to the Woonsocket Water Treatment Plant.
The Providence Journal also spoke with State Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin on the grant:
"Most of the new work will be the addition of trees and shrubs along the sides to improve the appearance. He said care had to be taken in choosing what varieties to use. The vegetation had to be native to the area and not grow in a way that would hang branches into the bikeway or send roots that would break up the pavement, he said."
